What makes a good porta potty spot?

A good porta potty spot is firm, level ground within about 25 feet of where our service truck can park, with a clear 10-foot-wide lane to it. The spot should stay out of traffic, away from food and seating, and off low ground that collects rain or meltwater.

CheckWhy it matters
Level within a couple of inchesDoors close square and the unit cannot rock or tip
Within 25 ft of truck parkingOur service hose reaches; service is never skipped
10-ft lane, 12-ft clearanceTruck can deliver, service and pick up
Not on septic tank lids or drain fieldsWeight and traffic can damage septic parts
Away from food, 50–100 ftKeeps odor and lines away from guests
Door facing away from streetPrivacy and fewer complaints

Can a porta potty go in my driveway or on the street?

A porta potty can go in your driveway with no permit in most Central Minnesota cities. Placement on a street, boulevard or sidewalk usually needs approval from the city, and many HOAs limit how long a unit can sit in view. Driveway, side-yard or behind-garage placement avoids both issues.

In St. Cloud, check with the City of St. Cloud before asking for curbside placement. In HOA neighborhoods, ask about the rules for construction-period units.

What about winter placement?

In winter, place the porta potty in a spot you already plow, with the door facing away from the northwest wind so drifts don't block it. Mark the unit with a tall flag so plows don't bury it, and keep a 10-foot path to it clear on service day.
