How do you keep a porta potty from freezing?

We keep a winter porta potty from freezing by charging the tank with a freeze-resistant brine solution at delivery and at every weekly service, instead of plain blue deodorizer. Standard units have no water lines, so nothing else can freeze. Deluxe flushing units and sinks are summer-only because their water lines can freeze.

On very cold sites, contents can still slush up between services if the unit is heavily used. Add a second weekly service on big crews in January and February.

What should I do about snow?

Keep snow cleared from the porta potty door and a path wide enough for our service truck, about 10 feet, with no snowbank between the truck and the unit. If the path is blocked on service day, the visit is missed and the unit fills faster. Pick a spot that your plow already clears.

  • Don't let a plow bury the unit; mark it with a flag on a tall stake.
  • Face the door away from the prevailing northwest wind so drifts don't block it.
  • On frozen ground, we set units on level, packed snow or a pallet base.

Does spring thaw affect porta potty delivery?

Spring thaw can affect porta potty delivery on rural roads. Minnesota seasonal load limits restrict heavy trucks on some county and township roads, usually from March into May. Our service trucks still run, but a rural delivery or pickup may shift a day while limits are posted.

Check posted limits at MnDOT seasonal load limits. Read how spring load limits affect deliveries.

Questions people ask before they bookStraight answers, before you call.

Do you rent porta potties in winter in St. Cloud?

We rent standard porta potties all winter across Central Minnesota, with freeze-resistant tank treatment and weekly service.

Is a winter porta potty more expensive?

Winter rentals cost about the same as summer rentals. A standard job-site unit usually runs $200–$325 per 28-day cycle with weekly service.

Can I rent a heated porta potty?

We don't rent heated units. Most winter crews use a standard unit with freeze-resistant treatment; for comfort events, a winterized restroom trailer with power is an option.

What happens in a blizzard?

If roads close, service shifts to the next safe route day. We call or text when a visit moves.

Can I get a hand wash station in winter?

Hand wash station water can freeze below 32°F. In winter we suggest hand sanitizer in each unit and hand washing indoors where possible.
